Janessa is a Black, Queer multi-disciplinary artist from Vancouver, Canada. Janessa grew up dancing and was trained to be a professional ballet dancer in her teen years. She is now a Filmmaker, Dancer and Actor. She loves to express herself through visual and movement based arts. In her spare time, she loves to dabble in multiple different hobbies like Rollerskating, Exotic Floorwork, Voguing and Scriptwriting.
Janessa was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata in 2016 and lost all her hair by 2018. This experience was extremely difficult at the time and especially for her as a Black woman in non-black area. Janessa grew up modelling and acting but never really embraced her Afro hair because of never seeing it celebrated in the media. Janessa lost all her hair before she got to learn to love it. She is now using her experience with Alopecia to reframe and celebrate herself no matter the standards of beauty. She is extremely passionate about being visible and transparent so that other Alopecians don’t feel so alone in this journey.
