Tayla is an multidisciplinary artist and advocate, based in Melbourne, who lives with a rare neuromuscular condition. She is passionate about authentic, empowering representation in media and storytelling, from which her work in visual art, poetry, writing and advocacy has bloomed.
Growing up in the performing arts, dancing for a decade in many styles as well as teaching, she discovered the power of connection, through creative narrative and self expression. Now as an electric wheelchair user, who is ambulant at times with a dynamic disability, her muscles weaken and sometimes paralyse with movement. Tayla uses her lived experience to challenge perceptions, spark conversations and connect. In her spare time, she enjoys exploring the creative worlds of fashion, podcasting, film and live performances, or spending time with animals, particularly her two cavalier pups.
Before her condition progressed, Tayla was studying to become a nurse/midwife and her first experience in front of the camera as a wheelchair user, was shooting for an International Women’s Day campaign with BOD by Finch. Her artistic work has featured in exhibitions across Melbourne, online with RUSSH magazine and won awards with the University of Sydney and the Victorian State Parliament. Tayla was anambassador for Muscular Dystrophy Australia, a presenter at multiple Melbourne Disability Expos, a state finalist in the 2024 Australian Poetry Slam and a guest on the ‘ListenABLE’ podcast.
