Born and raised in New Zealand, Jonny has been fortunate enough to live the Kiwi lifestyle. Growing up semi rurally, he has been involved in sport his whole life, playing tennis and squash to a reasonable level as well as cricket, golf, volleyball and has given most other ball sports a go too! In 2009 he completed the Coast to Coast; a 243km race on bike, kayak and foot from one side of the South Island to the other, across/over the Southern Alps.
Jonny is a father to a nine year old son, Jack, and lives with him in Christchurch. After 13 years working as a Business Manager in sport, he went out on is own with his marketing business. As well as doing this, he is also a first aid instructor and driving instructor and mixes his work week up across all three of these roles, facilitating, presenting and training to a wide range of people.
Jonny’s disabilities (or rather deformities, as there is no real disability as such) have been with him since birth. Over the years Jonny has come to realise that people looking at his deformity is simply a natural reaction to something that is ‘different’ and as humans we are drawn to look at things that are different/not the same as everything else and non symmetrical. It is essentially an evolutionary defence response to protect us from or identify potential danger. He is keen to help remove the awkwardness around this by promoting the ‘normality’ of looking at something that isn’t the same as everything else as opposed to be being ‘rude’ and both parties learning to be comfortable with this and move past it; to look past the deformity and see/accept the person.
