BIOGRAPHY
Michelle Roger is currently based in Melbourne.
Michelle has lived with complex chronic illness and disability for the past 15 years. Her primary diagnosis falls under the umbrella of Dysautonomia and involves autonomic nervous system instability. Michelle varies between using a walking stick and wheelchair, though she tends to use her wheelchair more often. She also has a cardiac pacemaker and uses compression stockings every day to help maintain blood flow and stay upright.
Michelle runs a project on Instagram called #UpAndDressed which began as a celebration of simply being up and dressed when chronically ill and has progressed to a celebration and exploration of fashion and styling and self-portraiture. This has led to many opportunities including rolling in Melbourne Fashion Week in 2018 as part of Access to Fashion, the first show of it's sort for fashion week using models who all had chronic illness or disability. Michelle also spoke on panel for MFW on the need for inclusive fashion and greater diversity of representation in the industry. Michelle has also been featured by local fashion brands as well as publications.
Michelle is passionate about increasing the representation of older disabled models and pushing the boundaries of how they are portrayed.
Michelle loves styling and merging vintage pieces with modern, op shop finds, and unlikely settings and poses. Michelle makes ornate walking sticks using everything from flowers and gems to gold leaf and wirework. She began doing this as she found available mobility aids underwhelming and nothing really fit with her style and love of colour and bling. She loves that they are hard to miss as she is determined not to hide her mobility aids and to embrace them.
Michelle is a writer and artist by trade. She is a Fellow of the Write-ability program of Writers Victoria and has been published in a number of literary magazines and has previously written a blog for 10 years.
Michelle has appeared on a variety of panels for the Emerging Writers Festival, The Digital Writers Festival and Latrobe Literary Festival. She has combined her love of writing and photography (particularly self-portraiture) as an Artist in Residence for a local shire in 2019. The project was hosted completely on Instagram and explored her life as a disabled woman and also included an element where disabled and chronically ill people could add their own words to her photos.
Outside of all of this, Michelle spends most of her days with her rescue Great Danes and chickens who often feature in her #UpAndDressed shots. Michelle lives with her husband of 27 years and has two adult sons.
